History

History is a set of lies agreed upon.

Hank Williams III - Puttin' the Dick Back In Dixie

In the critically acclaimed BBC documentary series Lost Highway: The History of American Country a couple of years back, was some interview footage with Hank Williams III. I've never had much time for Hank Williams Junior, but Hank Williams III struck me as the real deal.

Call it hard-twang, punkabilly, cowpunk, alternacountry, slacker swing or honky punk. It's certainly not your grandfather's country music nor is it your father's, either, unless your grandfather happens to be the legendary Hank Williams and your father Hank Williams Jr.  read more »

Journalists

A journalist is someone who cannot distinguish between a bicycle accident and the end of civilisation.

— George Bernard Shaw

I'm only Bleeding

Driving for some hours today to the Optomist in Queenscliff I was singing along with the Car Collection I made for the Rose's Gap road trip and on the way home was a stripped back version of It's All Right Ma, I'm only Bleeding by Bob Dylan with nothing but a guitar and a harmonica. The Byrd's version was a significant feature of the soundtrack to Easy Rider with Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.

IAMIOB is one of my all time Dylan favorites. Pure Beat poet inspired stream of consciousness pre-rap observations of the essential existential angst of modern life. I can't believe I just wrote that, but that's the best way I can put it. Or you can just listen to the man himself in one of these MyTube thingies. Sensational lyrics if you maintain the concentration.  read more »

Perfect evening

I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.

High & Lonesome - Irish Murphys

The High & Lonesome all-singing and dancing high in the saddle big band is a monthly Thursday regular at Irish Murphys until the end of the year.

They’ve built a bit of a following and the crowds just seem to be getting better, as are all the High & Lonesome boys as they pump out a pretty solid night of tight arrangements, fine instrumental work, three part vocal harmonies and a big driving bottom end as Yardup and Reinhart kick along a rocking rhythm on skins and doghouse bass.

With Chips, Chopsticks and Slim taking care of the singing and swapping instruments, Mr Russell Spiller can be found at his finest – totally winging it. The boys have pretty much decided they don’t need to rehearse with Russell as it just confuses him.

A great night of classic covers, folk, country and bluegrass done as only they can. Attracting punters of all ages to Geelong’s best roots music venue, Irish Murphys. The craic is 100.

Pancho & Lefty

Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997) was a country-folk music singer-songwriter, performer, and poet. Throughout his career he was widely admired by fellow songwriters, particularly in the folk and country genres, but greater fame eluded him, in part because of his unconventional vocal style and in part because his erratic personal behavior could make him quite difficult to deal with.

Many of his songs, including "Pancho and Lefty," "If I Needed You," and "To Live is to Fly," have been widely covered and are considered standards of their genre.  read more »

The Thrill is Gone

At Roses Gap Chips ran us through BB King's The Thrill is Gone a few times in the style of Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.

Sure enough there is a video clip on YouTube they made of this track from their Jerry Garcia and David Grisman album of 1991.
